[BoTW] I've almost done it! I've almost beaten a Zelda game without googling ANYTHING! Posted: 19 Feb 2020 10:00 PM PST But I'm about to crack. I can't find the eleventh memory and I'm losing my damn mind over it. It was my goal to only play the final mission after I find all of the memories, but... Imma take a small break to recharge for a little bit, and then go back and look for some more. Wish me luck! Please don't say where it is I'm just venting a lil bit [link] [comments] | ||
[ST] Beat Spirit Tracks recently, my thoughts. Posted: 19 Feb 2020 11:03 PM PST I passed on Spirit Tracks when it was released despite having liked Phantom Hourglass a lot. Something about the themes and visuals of the game just didn't appeal to me much. So that's how I beat the game for the first time in 2020. I was surprised going into it. I expected not to like the train, after experiencing the freedom of PH's boat, but the way they worked the tracks into the plot and side quests was very well done. I generally enjoyed transportation more on ST than PH- the only exception being the portals, which were a lot less convenient than the Cyclone Tablet. The dungeon design was pretty well done, but nothing I would write home about. I can't say I had a favorite, but there were none I disliked. The items are another story, though. Getting the bow last just felt wrong somehow, and some of the items (the blower and especially the whip) were strange, and felt out of place, mechanically. I can't say there was anything objectively wrong with them, they just didn't feel quite right. One of the game's biggest flaws was its overreliance on the microphone. Pan flute songs, especially the Lokomo songs, were am absolute nightmare, and repeatedly using the blower made me lightheaded. It really just came off as an annoying, half-functional gimmick most of the time. At least Phantom Hourglass only required the microphone two, maybe three times. But speaking of music, mechanics aside, this game has one of the best soundtracks of any LoZ game, and I mean it. The title/railway music easily makes it into my top 10, with the likes of Gerudo Valley, the Great Sea, TP's trailer song, Ballad of the Wind Fish, and WW's title theme. I was amazed at how much there was to do outside the dungeons, and I personally had more fun doing side tasks than following the main story. Dungeons kind of felt like a chore, though they weren't bad by any means. They just weren't the best the franchise has had to offer, and there was such a wealth of other things to do! I have mixed feelings about the train customization. The way you get new train parts is vastly superior to PH's luck-based methods, but I was disappointed with what we got. I actually liked the original train better than any of the custom ones. It was visually interesting, but not overdoing it, and had an actual train whistle. I was sad that it wasn't viable due to its low health. Once I got the full golden train, there was no reason not to use it, since its health is so high, but its weird, tinkly whistle was so unsatisfying to pull. The story was a lot more compelling than I expected. It was definitely one of the more childish plots, but the lore was surprisingly deep, and I actually cared about the characters quite a bit. Having Zelda, especially a Zelda as sassy as this one, figure so prominently in the story, was fantastic. After beating this story, I found myself hoping that they make a new Zelda game set in this timeline, in New Hyrule. This is getting a lot longer than I planned. I have a lot to complain about, but I feel like the good parts were good enough to outweigh the bad, even if they were outnumbered. All in all a good, fun game, that I do recommend if you can get it in your DS, 3DS, or virtual console. I give it a 7/10. Below average for a Zelda title, but underrated, and worth giving a try.
