From the rule in the sidebar:

Feel free to post news about new official merchandise whenever you like but for unofficial goods, or photos of your personal collection, please post them on Merchandise Mondays.

The sub gets filled with people taking photos of their collections, their amiibos, their copy of [insert game here] as well as people wanting to sell you stuff. So we limit it to Monday's so it doesn't over take the sub.

Brand new official merchandise announcements are allowed any day of the week, just unofficial merch or photos of your own merch is limited to today!

I’m the guy from last week whose parents wouldn’t let him play [OoT] because they were super uptight about magic. I’m playing through [OoT] for the first time and I just beat Shadow Link in the water temple. You were all correct. The water temple has nearly broken me. Shadow Link is mean.

I just saved after beating him and I'm gonna finish the water temple later tonight.

I don't know why but I have played links awakening countless times because I love just how quirky the game is but then when I hear Marrin sing the ballad of the wind fish I'm just like the animals in animal village who are just lost in the music I don't know why but I just live the song and the way it sounds when Marrin sings it (in the new remake) I don't know if it is weird or if you guys feel the same

[SS] Finally beat it, here are my thoughts.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 06:16 PM PST

I didn't own a Wii when this game came out. I got one later, along with the game, but didn't have a Motion Plus. I planned on buying one, but then my family moved and stuff got lost. Later, in college, I moved in with a guy who had the game, but I was too distracted by Overwatch, which had just come out, and so it slipped through my fingers yet again. This game did not want me playing it!

But, after being drawn back to the Zelda series by a sudden bout of nostalgia, I decided to make 2020 my Zelda year, and play through the last of the games I haven't yet: Triforce Heroes, Spirit Tracks, Link's Awakening, Hyrule Warriors, Skyward Sword, and Oracle of Seasons. In no particular order. I recently completed Spirit Tracks and did a review of it, and now has come Skyward Sword's turn.

So with the backstory out of the way, let's make a 'bad sandwich'. Good stuff, then bad stuff, then close with more good stuff!

So this game gets a really bad rap. I tend to agree with Egoraptor when it comes to Zelda (ALBW is my favorite, and LTtP>OoT) so I was prepared to hate this game. Boy was I shocked!

The story is hands-down the best of any LoZ game. I love a good story and good characters, so already, I can say this game makes my top 5 easily. I was genuinely blown away by how deep the characters were, and I loved every bit we learned about the underlying story and lore. Personality-wise, this is easily my favorite Zelda we've seen, and probably my favorite Link too. Groose might be one of my favorite Zelda supporting characters, contending with Linebeck and Ravio. We've had better villains (WW, TP), but Ghirahim was a memorable and enjoyable villain. I found his reasons for not killing Link to be acceptable each time, because that's just his personality.

People often complain about the linearity of the game, but honestly I dont get it. It's actually less linear than some of the other entries. Some unexpected and interesting backtracking really spiced things up, and the individual areas were an absolute joy to explore. Never once was I bored while traversing the terrain, although the sandiness of the Lanayru region was frustrating. Frankly, I don't think any of the complaints leveled at the game's structure are valid. Any game with a strong story will have some linearity to it, and this one gives you a pleasant degree of freedom, though of course not as much as say, A Link to the Past. Could it have used more freedom? Sure. But they did a fantastic job of not making it feel like you were on a railroad. It was an engaging experience, and that's what really matters.

Now onto the bad parts. I'm sure you know what's coming...

    Fi.

Every complaint leveled at Fi was right. Actually, I dont even think they did it justice. Fi is without contest the worst companion Link has ever had. Not only does she repeatedly state the painfully obvious, but she has no personality, and doesn't grow as a character in any way! Navi hardly ever nags you, Tatl is nothing but useful, Midna's sass is great and she undergoes fantastic development, Ciela is plucky and naive and grows as the story progresses, ST Zelda is comic relief as well as a good friend, Ezlo is a hilarious crotchety old man, and you probably don't know who Sprite is. Fi gets none of this. She insists on pointing things out as they happen right in front of your nose, throws in pointless, annoying percentages, and gives away how to solve puzzles! WHO GIVES UNSOLICITED PUZZLE HINTS IN A ZELDA GAME?! She has no redeeming character traits. I wish she was Demise's sword, so you could have Ghirahim as a helper instead. I'd happily fight Fi. I didn't shed a tear as she said goodbye. (Well okay, my eyes got damp, but that's just because I always cry a little when a game says "thanks for playing", but I felt nothing toward Fi.) I'm glad we won't be seeing her in any more Zelda games, and if I never play Skyward Sword again, she is the reason. I hate Fi with a burning passion.

Fi is the distillation of a general problem the game has: telling. Whoever made this game didn't even have a tenuous grasp on the concept of showing, not telling. Every step of the way, it felt like the game was designed to cater to a mentally challenged audience. Fi aside, this is clear in the opening cutscenes, with ham-fisted, awkward exposition dialogue between Zelda and her father Gaepora. And it continues throughout the game with the really, really strange design choice of stopping the game every time you pick up an item you haven't gotten yet in that play session, to tell you what it is, no matter how many of them you've collected in the past. It's really just a minor annoyance, but it's such a completely braindead design that it really dampened my opinion of the designers.

But as much as I have to say about how the game holds your hand, somehow I still don't hate it as much as I hate the motion controls ... I cannot tell you how many times I got screwed over by a swing going in the wrong direction. How many times Link shield-bashed when I even slightly moved my nunchuck, or didn't shield bash when I needed him to. How many times I missed a bug because the net wasn't moving right. How many Armos statues knocked me flat because Link wouldn't thrust. How many times Link would spin attack when I didn't want him to, or didn't when I did want it. But the worst of it was when you have to hack and slash quickly, because one of two things will happen then: The remote will need to be re-synced because now it's way off-center, or worse... the nunchuck malfunctions. So. Freaking. Often. Especially during important fights like Ghirahim, Link would start walking in a random direction. Then I would have to pause, disconnect my nunchuck, re-plug it, unpause, then re-sync. Often I got hit during the process because I couldn't control Link. This, more than anything else, enraged me. It was horrible.

Not to mention how disgustingly gimmicky those motion controls were. They had you use them for the most ridiculous of tasks. Jumping while climbing (which only worked about half the time, sometimes almost making me fall), rotating boss keys, hitting switches in certain directions, and so on. Shield-bashing should have been a button! Now, I will say they worked very well for controlling your loftwing and beetle, however. Gyroscopic flying is something I could really get behind! But it's so annoyingly overused that I often found myself groaning. We get it Nintendo, you have motion controls! You don't need to shoehorn it into the game in stupid ways!

It's a real pity, because if it was more reliable, motion controls would have made combat exhilarating. There were still some fantastic fights (robo-pirate, second Ghirahim, and Demise being three memorable ones) but most of the time it was buggy enough to just make fights into chores.

Fi and the motion controls were really the only bad part of the game, though. So on to more good stuff!

The stamina meter was okay. I was always careful to conserve it and only ran out at a bad time once or twice. I'm really just neutral toward it. It made sand annoying though. I don't like sand. As it is, I dont feel like the meter actually added or took anything away. It was unnecessary, but I wouldn't say the game would have been better without it.

But I will say, Skyward Sword has the best dungeon design of any 3D Zelda game. I don't even know how to verbalize it, but every puzzle was just so satisfying to do! The only one I wasnt big on was Skyview Temple, the first one. It was just kind of meh, and didn't have any real puzzles. Every dungeon from that point on was fantastic, especially the Lanayru ones. Sinking sand was awful, but the things they did with the timeshift stones made me giggle like a little girl!

Overworld pseudo-dungeons were also fantastic. Collecting Tadtones was great, the Eldin dragon's challenge was the single best stealth mission in any Zelda game, and just, everything else was great, really. Goddess Cubes made for great little sidetracks. Silent Realms were... kind of mixed, but more good than bad. They were great challenges, but twice I got caught after collecting every tear, and that kind of put me off them for the rest of the game. The first one, I was so terrified of the guardians, but I really felt my confidence grow as I found ways to get around them, learned their reach, and learned to get spotted on purpose to get a tear without worrying about those lantern f@%&ers.

Speaking of learning, this game has more of a learning curve than any other LoZ game. The motion controls, awful as they are, are learnable, and by the time I fought Ghirahim the second time, I felt so much more confident than I did the first time. It's an awesome feeling, truly. Breath of the Wild comes close, with its parry and dodge mechanics, but SS feels like it makes you work more for it, since you don't get a free flurry of blows for nailing a good dodge.

On the subject of shield-bashing, I thought upgrading items was great! It felt super rewarding, and I enjoyed collecting most of the materials, though I was annoyed sometimes by how rarely monster treasures dropped. I felt like a magnificent bstrd when I dropped the Sand Ship to go fully upgrade the bow and quiver before coming back. Hated the boss though.

Oh yeah, bosses. They were very good for the most part. I had no issues fighting Ghirahim multiple times. I actually love that they did that, because of the aforementioned feeling of power from climbing that learning curve. The Imprisoned was good too, because the mechanics changed every time, so it never felt stale. Using the Groosenator tactically was very rewarding, and made it three times as fun when I figured out how to use it more effectively. And then came Demise. I don't think this fight even needs an introduction. I felt like an absolute boss taking him down. I was surprised how easy it was, actually, especially with my invincibility potion! Yet despite the ease, I didn't feel any less awesome for it. It was a really heroic moment!

That about sums up all the important stuff. Really, all in all, this game doesn't deserve the hard rap it gets. Gameplay-wise, it wasn't as fun as Breath of the Wild, but it's definitely more my kind of game, so I personally will take SS over BW. I really hope that they continue to make LoZ games with story and characters as detailed and nuanced as this one. BW was a step in the wrong direction in that department, so going back to this was a breath of fresh air.

This is a game for players who just want fun. Hardcore gamers will hate it. In the end, this one firmly takes a place in my top 5 Zelda games. Where exactly it lands depends on my mood, but the gimmicks and Fi will forever keep it out of the #1 place I currently reserve for LBW. Right now I think its solid story, lore, and characters put it just ahead of LTP, so just barely second best.

With only OoS and LA left, here is my personal ranking of the games:

LBW, SS, LttP, MM, OoT, BW, TH, MC, HW, TP, WW, FSA, PH, OoA, ST, CoH, LoZ, AoL

[LAHD] Found Heart Container Glitch w/ Dampe's Piece and Whole Container

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 10:37 AM PST

So, I got a piece of heart and a full container from Dampe at the same time after completing a dungeon. The piece completed a container and the full container should have counted for a second. Once he stopped talking, only one heart was added to my life.

Luckily, the game recounted the collected pieces and containers and fixed my state once I walked outside. I had the two new containers. Seems the game can only visually grant you one new container at a time and never expected the case where you could gain two in one action.

Glitch doesn't really affect anything as far as I can see. But hats off to Nintendo for sticking with that state machine style programming.

[SS] Skyward Sword - New Player Tips

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 05:28 PM PST

So I bought a Wii so I could play Skyward Sword and I'll start my campaign tomorrow. I've read a bit online about things to know before playing but most information are walkthroughs and those kind of take the fun of playing the game for me. I like just tips and things I should do or not forget so I can enjoy my playthrough without missing much. If someone has tips or could point me to some link (pun intended) I'd apreciate it.

Tks in advance for all the replies!

I’m ashamed to admit that I’m beginning Twilight Princess for the first time. [TP]

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 06:10 AM PST

My earliest childhood memories include Zelda. I remember playing my stepdad's copy of Link's Awakening on the SNES SuperBoy. I've always hailed OoT as one of my favorite games of all time, was big into the Oracles on GBC, and so on. However, I missed the boat on GameCube when I was a kid. We had a Wii later on but I never got into it, it was more for my younger siblings while I had a 360. So I missed the boat on Twilight Princess, Windwaker, and Skyward Sword.

I started Twilight Princess yesterday, made it through the forest temple before I went to bed. So far I really enjoy it. It's pretty, clever, and so far just a very satisfying game. I truly get all the hype and why all my friends look at me funny when I admit I haven't played it.

Any tips, suggestions, warnings, or just wanna ridicule me for not having play this? I'm feeling that "first time" joy and excitement already and I'm open discussion about it!

[OoT] No nostalgia ocarina of time

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 07:03 AM PST

I only started playing the Zelda series (the 3D Zeldas) at 19 (5 years ago) so have no nostalgic connection to the series in anyway. However, after playing all of them I have to conclude that Ocarina of Time is the best one (closely followed by MM) and now my favourite game of all time.

What is it about OoT that makes it so timeless?

[BoTW2]Could breath of the wild 2 be the final game of the Zelda timeline

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 12:41 AM PST

Idk it is just a gut feeling but I think botw2 could be the last game in the timeline because as we have figured out botw has linked all 3 timelines together and seeing as botw2 could be the proper ending everyone was hoping for in botw I have a gut feeling that it could be the last game. I know there is no evidence to prove this but I just have a feeling that it could be. What do you think about botw2 maybe being the last game of the Zelda timeline??

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 07:58 PM PST

I'm in the graveyard after beating the first dungeon and was told their was a grave that I could push by a walkthrough page but it isnt budging, and it doesn't come up when I search my question on Google. If it helps, I'm on the Nintendo Switch online NES game collection.
