[BOTW] The Master Sword in BOTW is completely disproportionate and pisses me off immensely (rant)

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 09:43 AM PDT

Okay, so I've been an amateur blacksmith/bladesmith since I was 12, and let me tell you, the proportions of any kind of blade are extremely important. Every time I see this incarnation of the Master Sword, I just get uncomfortable.

The length of a blade dictates where it can pivot, how heavy it is, and also the force of a cut at the farthest point. As far as force is concerned, force=mass x acceleration, so a thicker/wider blade of the same length would technically have more stopping power than a smaller one. Except, in practice, this isn't the case. If you can't maneuver the blade, you will die. That's it.

The Master Sword in this game looks to be between 40 and 45 inches (120-125cm), and is THICCCQ as hell. It's a paddle. Granted, yes, I noticed it has a gigantic fuller (cut out section for weight reasons) of about 2 inches in width (5cm), but even with that, it's unwieldy as a 1 handed weapon. The design of the blade lends itself to a German Longsword form of sword-fighting, which utilizes 2 handed weapons. A 2 handed weapon would have a much larger hilt, yet the Master Sword does not. It's clearly a 1 handed hilt, with a blade guard and pommel that hinder mobility. Too close to the hand, and too boxy. Link would never get the mobility necessary to execute his attacks.

For what Link uses the sword as, the blade should be around 38in (92cm) long, 2.5-3in (6.75-7.5cm) wide, and should have a streamlined hand-and-a-half pommel. The fuller in the blade should stay far away from the edges, and be a shallow 1.5in (3.75cm) wide groove. Ideally, the blade would be differentially hardened, like a katana, but doing that with western style blades can waste more metal than you manage to put out. This hardening process is what curves the katana, so you'd need to be very specific in how you distribute the clay, so as not to curve the Master Sword. This would give it the structural integrity to maintain most of its edge from battle to battle, before it starts looking like it does in Memory #18.

Honestly, I lack the facilities right now, but some day, I want to make a properly proportioned master sword for you guys. Right now, the weapon Nintendo is using can only be explained as functional by magical-goddess-powers.

EDIT: so yes, some people have pointed out that I incorrectly saw a fuller in a couple frames, and that while it might have looked like it was a fuller, it was more likely an optical illusion.

Also, some people seem to have misunderstood me, I'm an amateur blacksmith. This isn't my job, and while I have experience, knowledge, and wisdom imparted from professionals I respect, I'm not a professional. Sorry for the confusion, I stated this at the top but it seems to have been overlooked.

[BoTW] Here is some food for thought: The rupee has remained the stable currency of hyrule for over 10,000 years.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 08:50 AM PDT

I was looking through the the Hyrule Historia, and even though there have been multiple takeovers of Hyrule, completely disrupting the economy, the rupee has remained the stable currency, with inflation only appearing in botw. There seems to be no sign of the ruppee losing value for the next while. No civilisation on earth has had a stable currency for 10,000 years. Hyrule must be doing something right.

[ALL] What is your favorite underappreciated moment in a Zelda game and why?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 06:43 PM PDT

One of my personal favorite moments is when you finally learn the Song of the Hero in SS, a cutscene plays of the dragons singing the song, which is a rendition of the original theme. It's such a wonderful scene that pays homage to the series, but no one really talks about it.

[MM] This game gives me a Heart attack

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 06:05 PM PDT

Can we talk about how literally everything in Majora's Mask creates stress from both an in game and meta standpoint? My first time playing this game and I just can't get it out of my head even when I'm not playing.

-The Timer is constantly telling you "you're running out of options"

-If you don't do things in a certain order, you'll have to do them again in the next cycle

    -THE MOON IS WATCHING

-even if you solve these problems, rewinding time just feels like erasing progress since they all get reset.

Don't get me wrong, I like the game so far, but Christ on a cracker it's borderline oppressive to play sometimes.

It only took 38 game overs, lol. I'm guessing that since this is my first post, I can't post a screenshot.

    [ALL] Rank the Zelda Remakes

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 09:45 PM PDT

Rank the Zelda remakes. Rank them by how they are as a remake, not how much you like the games themselves

    My list:

    1. Majora's Mask 3D

The only remake that is not an improvement over the original. It is by far the least faithful remake, and most of the changes are for the worse. There are some good changes, most notably being the song of double time, but there are lots of bad changes like the eyeballs on the bosses, the ice arrows, the Zora Swimming, the save system, the rumored events, the deku flower platforms, and the sign at the entrance to the Swamp Spider House. The bad changes IMO make this worse than the original.

    1. Twilight Princess HD

Although clearly the definitive version of the game, this is low on the list because it just wasn't necessary. Twilight Princess was not that old, and the Wii U could play the wii version of Twilight Princess, which is barely any different from the HD version aside from some minor tweaks.

    1. Ocarina of Time 3D

The definitive version of Ocarina of Time. It's a very faithful remake with updated graphics and some quality of life improvements like the inventory system.

    1. Wind Waker HD

Great faithful remake that is largely the same as the original but with some minor changes that are all for the better, like the inclusion of the swift sail and the improved triforce quest

    1. Link's Awakening Switch

Remake of Link's Awakening with overhauled graphics. The are additional collectibles to find (heart pieces and seashells) and it's still a very faithful remake. Shouldn't be $60 though.

    [ALL] Controversial Zelda Opinions

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 02:09 PM PDT

Title says it all. What are your controversial Zelda series opinions. Post them here!

My controversial opinion is that I, after taking a good look a zelda lore, I realized its very inconsistent and holes are everywhere. Nothing interesting in the series ever gets fully explained, or we get a vague at best answer. Even worse, whenever it calls back to older games, or some new location is introduced, we get some vague ass description of it. Botw is a symptom of this problem in the franchise. Think about it, as long as this 20+ year old series has been running, how much so we actually know about the world? The answer is very little.

[LoZ] Just discovered the NES original on my Nintendo Switch

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 08:45 PM PDT

I love the entire franchise but can't remember playing the original... maybe because I was 3-4 years old. I distinctly remember playing SNES Link to the Past multiple times. Is Legend of Zelda worth a play thru? Or should I just restart BotW?

[ALL] What's the song version from the 30th zelda anniversary 3ds background

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 02:53 PM PDT

I know know that the song is called "great fairy fountain" but it is a version where the harp is replaced by a flute. I can't find this version in the internet and also shazam doesn't recognize the song.

[ALL] For real though, how strong is Ganon?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 11:24 AM PDT

People always bring up that Link defeats him every time but it's almost always with the help of Zelda, sages, every being in Hyrule, mythical items and lucky timing. Say Link just had to 1v1 him in OoT no Zelda involved, wouldn't Ganon just fucking clobber this man? Why does it always take 2/3 of the Triforce to beat his 1/3? Is it because my boy is stacked af?

[Other] Which master sword and hylian shield replica would you recommend me buy(More details in the post).

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 09:06 PM PDT

I really love The Legend of Zelda obviously and want a replica of the hylian shield and master sword. I don't want it to be sharp because I feel as someone will get hurt by it. I also don't want it be plastic as I want to feel like wow I have the master sword in my hands. As for the hylian shield I want it to feel like I can hold it like a shield. If these descriptions are too unreasonable I will still try to listen to your reccomendations but the only real thing I don't want is that it will be super sharp. Thanks to anyone who replies!

    [MM] Interesting ways to play

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 08:07 PM PDT

So I've been playing LOTS of Majora's Mask and it's my new favourite game of all time. But as with any game, it's gonna get stale soon enough. I was wondering...what would be some interesting twists to add onto a playthrough? The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are 100% completion and a run where I can't get any heart pieces or something like that. Do you guys have any interesting ideas?

[ALL] Any picture recommendations for a custom Zelda jigsaw puzzle?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:25 PM PDT

I'm going to buy my friend, a big Zelda fan, a 1000-piece, 20x30 inch (50x75cm) puzzle soon.

But I need a picture that will look nice on a puzzle that big and not be torturously long to complete (IE decent resolution but also not something minimalist with just a couple uniform colors on it)

He's played all of the games (I don't know his favorites but he won't complain whatever he gets). If anyone has any image recommendations, it would really help me out and make him happy. Thanks

PS I don't need an image to be exactly 2x3 ratio. Anything would be nice and I can find a way to make something work

[ALTTP] I got transported to the Dark World after fighting the Ganon knockoff, but I didn't have the moon pearl, so I went back and got it from the overworld. I reset my portal back to the Dark World pyramid, however, and I can only go to the Dark World Death Mountain, which doesn't lead anywhere.

How do I get back to the pyramid place? Have I softlocked it?

[ALL] What is your all time favorite zelda game?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 09:42 PM PDT

For me, I'm split between Ocarina of Time and BoTW.

I do have some issues with BoTW though. I dont like how shrines completely replaced dungeons. There is something special about going to a brand new dungeon in OoT for the first time, and getting that excited fuzzy feeling, because your excited about your next adventure.

That's what dungeons add to a game like Zelda, every dungeon is like going on a brand new adventure.

I know why they decided on Shrines. It makes it easier and a lot faster to develop the game with shrines, instead of huge full dungeons.

However, I do believe BoTW set a GREAT foundation for future zelda games. They should go back to unbreakable weapons though. And have it so you need to do a few things, a few challenges to get a specific weapon, then upgrading that weapon. Or at the very least have a mechanic that allows us to upgrade the weapons we like, to make them unbreakable. And have it so we can repair broken weapons that are not fully upgraded.

Also, I do not like what they did with the armor set bonuses. The main sets are great, it's the DLC sets and other minor sets that is the problem. Most of the DLC sets and other non main sets, have set bonuses that have the same exact bonus as another set in the game. Which takes away from the other set that have the same bonuses. Each armor set should have a different unique bonus, otherwise what's the point in getting the other sets?

Idk. I just hope they expand on BoTW Sequel. Maybe put dungeons back in the game. I do believe that BoTW did deserve game of the year that year. It's one hell of a game, and a great zelda game.

Edit: I forgot to mention, I loved all of the main Zelda games, except for the zelda game that could only be played on Wii with motion controls. I hate motion controls, so I skipped that one.
