The Legend of Zelda | [TP] I'm starting my first EVER Zelda game today. I've never played ANY before, some kind of excited. What better time to start a new game than a 4-day weekend, am I right?

[OoT] I just finished Ocarina of Time for the first time

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 09:04 PM PST

I know this sub gets hundreds of these posts, but damn, I really wasn't expecting OoT to be as good as it was. I figured its legendary status was mostly due to nostalgia but nope, it's still an extremely good game.

I've started the game many times on N64 emulators, and I just couldn't ever get through them. The farthest I ever got was to the water temple. But I got the game for my 3DS recently and I decided to try it again and I enjoyed it immensely.

It feels weird that I've been a Zelda fan for so long and I've never finished Ocarina until now. But I'm very glad I did.

[botw] Breath of the Wild is amazing, but replaying Twilight Princess opened my eyes to my biggest issue with it.

Breath of the Wild was my favorite Zelda game for the past 3 years due to the pure amount of freedom it offers in gameplay and puzzle solving.

Buttt.... one thing that I realized has always kinda irked me is that... the sense of progression and wonder isn't as present as past 3D Zelda titles.

The open world format works to it's benefit and downfall. It has the same issue as MGSV where if you're a explorer, you'll have already cleared and looted areas apparently important to the story before the story shows it to you.

So the map will get stale much quicker as you complete objectives in a world you've already seen in it's entirety. Especially if you activate every tower within your first 10-20 hours of gameplay in a game that expects 60-80 hours of your time. You'll have met almost every important NPC by this point too.

In the more linear zelda games, there's a consistent sense of wonder and exploration. When you think you've seen it all, theres more (kinda like the desert temple and the snow temples in TP.) There's always more people to meet, more places to see, more stuff to do.

I feel like trickling areas and content to the player helps the pacing a lot more than letting them access them all at once. It also helps build the world, like Oot, MM, WW, and TP feel much more realistic and lived-in. Sometimes they feel even bigger than what they truly are because of consistent pacing of the journey.
