[BotW] [AoC] How Age of Calamity could have been amazing

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:21 PM PST

Okay, I know what the title sounds like, so let me clarify something.

For one, I love Age of Calamity. It's fun and feels great to play. I never knew where the story was taking me and blasted through it in about 3 days because I just had to see what was coming next and how things would be resolved.

However... Even though I liked the game, it isn't what I was expecting. I was expecting the story of the struggle to beat Calamity Ganon leading into Breath of the Wild. And while this game shows the story of beating Calamity Ganon... It does not lead into Breath of the Wild, because it is, in fact, a timeline split.

Real quick, anyone else think it's funny that Nintendo insisted that Breath of the Wild was so far ahead of all the other games that it could theoretically take place in any timeline? So much so that their website just places it at the end, almost like a new start to a timeline, only for their next, new game to just.... Create another split? I know Nintendo didn't make it but I'm considering it canon if only because Nintendo did work closely to help them refine the story and make sure it fit Breath of the Wild. So even if Nintendo did not come up with the time travel story, it seems like it was approved.

However... It was around Chapter 5 (which is also the chapter that the future champions appear, imagine that) that I realized I wasn't going to get the story I wanted out of this game. You see, up until the champions were saved, I still believed that AoC would eventually lead into BotW. Towers deactivated, showing why they might in in BotW. Rhoam was dead. The champions were going to die. Link and Zelda were just in a different spot, struggling away from the castle. Then... We get a happy ending and a timeline split.

This isn't want I want to discuss today though, because at the end of it, I did have fun with Age of Calamity. I'm trying to 100% it. (Taking a break because of just how much of it I played that first week though.) What I want to talk about is what it could have been.

For one thing, I believe that it is 100% possible to have a prequel game where you know the outcome because of the main game and it still be enjoyable. The journey along the way all all that. Spoilers for Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna, the Golden Country.

Because Torna came out after the main game, and offered as dlc, most players at the time will already know the ending of the game. (I say that because now that both have been out awhile, if you look, you see people asking if they should play 2 or Torna first, and I've even seen posts people have made who did play it first.

Going into the game, you know Torna is going to sink. You know something is going to happen to Mythra to make her create Pyra. You know Mikhail is going to become a blade eater and that Jin will become a flesh eater, meaning Lora (and by extension Haze) are going to die.

But the journey there made it. You learn more about Lora. You see how close she is with Jin and Haze. You meet Addam and even get Minoth in your party, showing you how 'Cole' knew Pyra! Hugo has Brighid and Aegaeon, so you can see them more. Yeah, the community feature is debated, but since I like doing sidequests anyway, I thought it helped the story out, cause it fosters real bonds and shows you how people can interact and be influenced.

But... The ending still made me cry. Hugo, and by extension Brighid and Aegaeon die. Milton dies, which affects Mikhail. Mythra loses it and create Pyra to cope because she lost control of her powers during that final battle.

There's little details like Gort being made into one of Amalthus's first blade eater experiments, and he goes after Lora. (it's a surprise battle after the 'end'). But then it's a cutscene of the praetorium marching on the Tornan refugees which means it isn't even that long after the end that Lora is killed... Yet the game still gives some insight because it then shows Jin with his red core crystal and Azurda trying to offer help even as Jin burns the photograph taken during the game. (Which like... ow, my heart.)

Point of that long block of Torna spoilers is that I believe it is possible to have a game where you know the ending and have it be enjoyable and build the world. Because it means Age of Calamity could have been a game where you knew what would happen- The Calamity rises, the champions die, Link gets fatally wounded and has to rest 100 years in the shrine of resurection to not die and Zelda spends 100 years trapped inside of Ganon to hold him at bay.

And this premise is what this discussion is. How Age of Calamity could have directly tied into Breath of the Wild instead of being a split timeline with the characters.

My uh... Set-up was long so if you're still reading this, I appreciate you.

Anyway, I feel like the first mission would be mostly the same. Obviously no Terakko or towers... But I feel like it would be a great chance to show some more character backstory. This memory tells us that Link's father is a knight, so why not have him be a character? He doesn't have to be playable, or he could be playable for just that first mission, but he could be there.

I don't have the whole game planned out. I would need to do way more research for that, but I feel like there's enough space between memories that there could have been examples. For one, there's a mission in Age of Calamity where Zelda is at the Spring of Courage. Why not also have one when she visits the Spring of Power?

This memory shows that Link had prevailed over at least 3 white lynels and a bunch of bokoblins. So we could have a mission there. Expand upon the memory and all. There's so much potential. Especially with the Yiga and Urbosa memories. (Age of Calamity completely unifying every race was really cool but also felt unnecessary. There was a mission where you pretty much destroyed the Yiga so...)

Urbosa's Diary has mentions of her and Zelda researching Naboris. Bam, a mission getting the divine beast and exploring the inside. Then another mission, or even part of the same mission, where you switch to Link and fight through Yiga until you get to Zelda in this memory.

The only thing I've thought hard about is the ending. How could we make Link lose but the game still feel satisfying?

The final memory shows Link in a state of utter exhaustion. Creating a Champion even says the master sword is covered in malice. The memory right before doesn't have Link in that state of exhaustion. Going frame by frame even shows that the master sword isn't covered in malice and chipped like it is in the final memory.

Maybe it wouldn't be fun gameplay wise, but a mission showing that event could have Link fighting guardian after guardian with no end. Slowly his health would chip down. When it's low enough, mission ends and Zelda awakens her power. Since you don't lose enough health to die, it's not a game over... But a timed mission I feel would be in bad taste. Good players with full health would still have Link practically dead after.

Then, Robbie's Memoirs states that he and Purah took Link to the shrine of resurrection. (I think Purah also tells Link she carried him but it's easier to just look at Robbie's journal than find a line she says once). The line right after says they then went to Kakariko village and left Impa, so I feel it'd be easy to have Impa be the playable character as she helps defend the three (Purah, Robbie, and Link) as they travel to the shrine of resurrection.

Finally is a double mission for Zelda. First, she travels from where Link fell to Korok forest to put the master sword to rest. Then there's the final mission. Zelda travels from the Great Hyrule Forest back to Hyrule Castle, blasting enemies with her new divine power until she makes it to the castle. From there, she travels to the castle to the sanctum to confront Calamity Ganon alone.

She weakens him with her powers before Ganon envelops her. (After all, the very first sentence of Robbie's Memoirs is "Let me start from the beginning. It was 100 years ago... Calamity Ganon had already swallowed Princess Zelda.")

Zelda stays strong within Ganon, using her powers to keep him weak and sealed within the castle as she waits for the day Link will awaken.

Credits can show survivors of the initial wave of calamity. Robbie and Purah moving to Akkala and Hateno respectively. We can see the stables setting up their network. We can see the land slowly overcome what was once towns. Then, right before the credits fade out we hear "Link... ...Open your eyes..." tying it nicely into the opening of Breath of the Wild.

To once again compare it with Torna: Right before the screen cuts to black with it just saying 'Torna - The Golden Country', the credits show a scene from the main game, with Rex just finding Pyra. And that's a 500 year gap rather than a 100 year one.

In conclusion? I think they could have done a lot more with Age of Calamity. They absolutely could have made it a game where we knew the ending and yet were surprised along the way. We could have learned so much more about the characters, seen the memories fleshed out. The ending would be bittersweet, because the Calamity did appear and kill a lot of people... But there's hope for the future, because Link survived.

Again, I really enjoy Age of Calamity for what it is. I just... Wish it was an actual prequal instead of a timeline split. I don't think I would even have minded Terrako changing the past up a bit if it still resulted in Breath of the Wild.

What does everyone think? I know there's been a few posts like this, but I wanted to wait a bit and see if I still felt this way after having time to actually process the story rather than simply consume it. (And I mean... Yeah, I do, or I wouldn't have made this post.)
