From the rule in the sidebar:

Feel free to post news about new official merchandise whenever you like but for unofficial goods, or photos of your personal collection, please post them on Merchandise Mondays.

The sub gets filled with people taking photos of their collections, their amiibos, their copy of [insert game here] as well as people wanting to sell you stuff. So we limit it to Monday's so it doesn't over take the sub.

Brand new official merchandise announcements are allowed any day of the week, just unofficial merch or photos of your own merch is limited to today!

[BoTW] I absolutely love BOTW. One of my only problems with the game is the diversity of enemies.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 07:59 PM PST

Let's compare the enemies of BOTW (2017) to Ocarina of Time (1998) and The Legend of Zelda (1986). Elemental types and upgraded/similar versions of enemies are all going to be grouped together and count as one enemy. All the different color moblins and all the different elemental keese only count as one enemy, because they are the same species, just stronger and with a different color palette.

    BOTW:

Bokoblin, Lizalfos, Moblin, Wizzrobe, Lynel, Chuchu, Stalfo, Cursed Mob, Guardian, Keese, Octorok, Pebblit, Yiga And Minibosses such as Hinox, Talos, Molduga

Edit: Bosses: Windblight Ganon, Fireblight Ganon, Thunderblight Ganon, Waterblight Ganon, Master Kohga, Calamity Ganon/Dark Beast Ganon

I don't count Naydra as a boss, neither does Zeldapedia

    DLC Boss: Monk Maz Koshia

    OOT:

Anubis, Armos, Dodongo, Bari/Biri, Beamos, Deku Baba, Poe, Skulltula, Bubble, Tektite, Deku Scrub, Moblin, Dinolfos/Lizalfos, Keese, Floormaster/Wallmaster, Freezard, Gerudo Guard, Gibdo/Redead, Gohma Larva, Guay, Leever, Like Like, Octorok, Peahat, Shabom, Shell Blade, Skull Kid, Spike, Stalchild, Stalfos, Stinger, Tailpasaran, Torch Slug, Wolfos And minibosses such as Big Octo, Flare Dancer, Dark Link, Dead Hand, Gerudo Thief, Iron Knuckle

Edit: Bosses: Gohma, King Dodongo, Barinade, Phantom Ganon, Volvagia, Morpha, Bongo Bongo, Twinrova/Twinrova Combined, Ganondorf/Ganon

The Legend of Zelda: (By Request)

Armos, Bubble, Darknut, Zol/Gel, Ghini, Gibdo, Goriya, Keese, Lanmola, Leever, Like Like, Lynel, Moblin, Moldorm, Octorok, Peahat, Pols Voice, River Zora, Rope, Stalfos, Tektite, Vire, Wallmaster, Wizzrobe

Bosses: Aquamentus, Dodongo, Manhandla, Gleeok, Digdogger, Gohma, Patra, Ganon

Ocarina of Time is not exactly an "open-world" game compared to what we have these days. It's relatively linear and has a big play area in it with multiple paths to take, but you don't have access to one giant map where you can climb walls and go in one direction for a half hour and still not reach the other side of the world. Breath of the Wild has a massive map that you can explore. You have no loading zones separating different areas of the overworld. The fact that there are so many more enemy types in Ocarina of Time than there are in Breath of the Wild is kind of disappointing. Obviously they don't need hundreds of new enemies, but adding things like Iron Knuckles, Wolfos, Torch Slugs, Peahats, Like Likes, Leevers, Guays, Gibdo/Redead, Deku Scrubs, Skulltulas, Tektites, Poes, Deku Babas, and Dodongos would have definately made the game so much more amazing.

The woods would have Skulltulas and Wolfos and Deku enemies trying to attack you. Death Mountain would have Torch Slugs and Dodongos to fight. Scary areas would have Poes and Redead and Gibdos! Water areas could have Tektites hopping on the water and Like Likes underwater trying to grab at you and Guays chasing you on a boat/raft. The desert would have Leevers rising from the sands to chase you. Barren fields would have Peahats rising from the soil to give chase to you and your horse! Maybe even occasionally you'll find Iron Knuckles chopping down the forest simply to cause destruction, or attacking travelers.

Again, BOTW is an amazing game, and I love it very much. I just wish there was more diversity in the enemies.

[OTHER] What would a Zelda TV series look like structurally?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:55 PM PST

I'm studying film and it's always an intriguing exercise to map out what an adaptation would look like, but it's usually more for effective on books than video games. I wanted to discuss how you guys think a Zelda series should look like.

Let's say we do Ocarina of Time (although these examples could work for many of the games). You already have the makings of a traditional Hero's Journey, with a call to adventure (Deku tree) , supernatural aid (Fairies, Ocarina), and even a middle Revelation/transformation/rebirth when Link pulls the master sword and lets Gannon rule for 7 years.

The issue lies within the objective. Obviously he wants to defeat Gannondorf and save the kingdom. But what are his means to do that? What is the episode structure? Is each episode chasing a MacGuffin such as the spiritual stones? Or is there no object he is searching for, and more of a journey to unify the kingdom/gain training to lead a war in Gannon. Is it both? Is that not subversive enough for people who have already played the game? Is chasing spiritual stones too "inherently video game" to translate to film without it feeling convoluted or "checklist-y"

I would LOVE to hear everyone's thoughts on this, and really any general thoughts on what you would personally want to see in a Zelda series (I personally think it should be animated. I couldn't imagine this world translating to live-action while maintaining the genuine wonder emotional resonance this series has within the video game medium).

[OTHER] Would anyone want a Zelda Maker? If so, what would you want in it?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:09 PM PST

It would probably have to be a bunch of the 2D Zelda styles, mainly because I can't imagine Nintendo being crazy enough to make a 3D Zelda Maker.

    [ALL] Zelda Movie?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 08:04 PM PST

Do you think they will ever make a Zelda movie? Filmed in the style of Lord Of the Rings , with human actors and some CGI ?

That would be awesome. I hope they do in my lifetime.

[OoT] How well would you say Ocarina of Time holds up on its own?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 08:21 PM PST

...okay, MAYBE that might be a bit of a contradiction, asking how well it holds up on its own. You need other games to see how well it holds up, but if it's on its own, it has nothing to compare it to... maybe...

What I mean is, the game design philosophies within the game, do you think that they can still give fun, or do you think other Zelda games (or games in general) have managed to surpass what Ocarina of Time did over 20 years ago?

The main meat of the game, I'd say, is in the dungeons themselves. Typically, you have to solve puzzles in a Zelda game, and this game is no exception. Though, I do wonder if the puzzles are a bit TOO simplistic, like having you push blocks onto a button. Essentially, you see something you need to do, so you do it. This game was more than likely the first of its kind, and I feel like this game was trying to see what it could get away with in a 3D environment at the time. Even the Water Temple raising isn't really that complicated.

The bosses and enemies, I'll admit some can be really fun to fight by proper timing and dodging, but I do feel like the overall game can be a bit too easy enough to not really need all the Heart Containers. Like, one of the main side things to do in the game, is come across a whole bunch of side hearts. Thing is, though, on my most recent playthrough, I only found maybe two full Heart Containers at the most outside of bosses, and I still managed to get through even Ganon with just having fairies in bottles. Essentially, if you know where the Fairy Fountain is, dying isn't really something that occurred often for me... but then again, it IS on a later playthrough (although a bit of time has passed from my last one).

That's somewhat of another thing. Maybe back then, Ocarina of Time might've been one of the only few games a player had at the time, and I could see someone spending a lot of time just trying to find what they can just because. When you do stray away from the main path, you can find different chests and Heart Pieces and whatnot, and Skulltulas. There's even an entire quest where you get an optional sword. Thing is, though, if your main goal is to just make it to Ganon and take him down, then you don't really need to do ANY of that.

My most recent playthrough, I managed to take down the final boss without getting the fourth jar with the Poes, doing any of the Biggoron Sword quest, stepping foot into the Gerudo Training Grounds, selling all of the masks, and so on. I also didn't even enter the fishing pond once. I also don't think you need Epona. All of this is additional content to enhance the world, but I'm wondering if having such things make the game feel like there's a lot more to offer. I just think maybe it's a bit weird that you can skip so much of the tools the game gives you to aid your progress, and still manage to defeat even the final boss with no issue.

On the other hand, say you just want to relax and play a game to ease your mind and just do fun things... can Ocarina of Time still offer that same thing if you were to try to see what there is to offer? Things like racing Ingo, finding all the Tokens and Heart Containers, getting the scales, finding all the quivers and enhancements, racing the guy in the Gerudo tent (forget his name), etc.?

Understand the Symbolism of the Original 3d Zelda Games [OoT] [MM]

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 10:36 AM PST

    Hi everybody!

I am writing multiple articles going through the symbolism of the original 3d zelda games (OoT and MM) I have written two articles so far. One discussing the meaning of Majora's Mask's story and my latest one discussing the Kokiri Forest in OoT. I want to know what everyone's thoughts are on these so I can make the articles better. I plan on writing more in the future that go deeper into the characters, dungeons, and lore. Let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas for future articles.

    Thanks!
