[SS] [BotW} Ganon: The Avatar of Malice

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 01:23 AM PDT

Before The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was released for the Wii, developers had stated in interviews that, while Ganon was not going to appear in the game, the story would have some sort of connection to the series' most recurring antagonist. That connection appeared in the form of the game's final boss, King Demise. While the Demon King looked almost nothing like any previous incarnations of Ganon, he did have the same...demeanor, I suppose. Call it what you want, but Demise felt similar to Ganon, unlike the game's main villain and Demise's henchman, Lord Ghirahim.

After you defeat King Demise, he uses the last of his power to place a curse on Hyrule, declaring with his remaining breath that Link and Zelda's descendants will be terrorized by an incarnation of Demise's hatred for generations. Based on what I said earlier, it would be reasonable to believe that he was talking about Ganon, but...that didn't make sense.

We know from Ocarina of Time that Ganon was originally a relatively normal human being named Ganondorf, and Ocarina of Time took place centuries after Skyward Sword. If Ganondorf was originally human, then how was he "created" by Demise? Is he supposed to be something like the anti-Christ? If that's true, why did it take so long for him to be born after Demise declared his curse? This was a major plot hole in Skyward Sword, but I feel like the developers realized this, so they found a way to fill it in the next major game: Breath of the Wild.

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, there exists a strange energy called Malice, which is controlled by Calamity Ganon. In the trailer for what is currently the next major game, taking place shortly after Breath of the Wild, Malice is apparently shown being produced by Ganondorf's mummified corpse, flowing out of it. The appearance of this mysterious, malevolent energy is also similar to what players have been seeing in previous Zelda games since The Wind Waker, whenever they defeat an enemy. This might mean that Malice, or the magic behind it, has been a part of Hyrule since the days that Ghirahim ruled over the land once known as The Surface, at least retroactively. Not only that, but the word "malice" is another form of "hate".

All of this evidence points to the very likely possibility that Malice is the incarnation of Demise's hate. After Demise's body was eradicated by the actions of the Triforce, the land that became known as Hyrule was infected by his Malice, which sewed chaos among its people and attracted monsters for generations. It was unfocused, however, until the day it found a host: Ganondorf Dragmire. Ganon used the power of Malice to help him obtain something even more powerful, the Triforce of Power, and both of them together allowed him to resurrect and reincarnate over and over again, allowing his hatred, and Malice, to grow stronger each time until he threw away what was left of his humanity to become a living Calamity, no longer needing the Triforce of Power to destroy Hyrule.

At least that's my theory. What do you think?
