[BoTW] Unpopular opinion: Breath of the Wild is the most Zelda game of any Zelda game.

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 10:26 PM PDT

I say this as I frequently see the criticism that BoTW is a great game, just not a great Zelda game. And that's a criticism that I understand where it comes from, but have some issues with.

There are 3 reasons why I think BoTW isn't just a great game, but possibly the most Zelda game we have.

First, Breath of the Wild takes more influence from the entire Zelda series than any other title. While some titles might take heavy influence from specific others (such as Twilight Princess often feeling like a refined Ocarina of Time), BotW can be seen borrowing elements from almost every game in the Zelda series. Such as the open world, finding your own way element of the original NES title, to the cel-shade character art style of WW, the Gerudo and Zora in BoTW are very reminiscent of OoT, the Gerudo in particular who have been absent in most games, even much more subtle references to lore like the flowers in the Lost Woods by the Master Sword reference ALttP, the Master Sword glow being the sound of Fi from SS, and the several locations from other games such as Lon Lon Ranch. So many staples of Zelda games, Ganon's Castle, Zora's Domain, the Master Sword, old enemies like Lynel and Hinox, are not only present in BoTW, but but bigger and better than ever. If you were a Zelda fan in the 80s, 90s, or 2000s, you will see something familiar. The soundtrack has so many references I wouldn't even know where to begin. Which brings me to the second point.

Second, the story brings much more importance to the lore of Zelda. Ganon has always been evil in each game, but Link doesn't see the consequence of his evil more than he does BoTW. It's more than simply "Ganon made things bad," but we see real actual tragic events that bring not just a fantasy element but a human element to the game. To Link, Daruk and Urbosa were friends, Revali was something of a friendly rival, and Mipha was a potential love interest. They had real and meaningful relationships to Link and they died because of Calamity Ganon, and Link cannot save them. This to me gives Calamity Ganon more magnitude as a force of evil in the game, which I find important for the player. The lore of the Master Sword also has a strong presence in the game. While yes, the Master Sword isn't required to beat the game, the story behind it being Link's weapon 100 years ago, and Zelda rescuing it after rescuing Link, and the process to which Link must go through in order to wield a fully powered Master Sword, highlight just how important a staple this is in a Zelda game. Similarly, the treatment of Zelda in BoTW is more thought out than any other title. Here she is a character who is flawed, multi-dimensional, intelligent, scholarly, insecure, powerful, proactive, has a temper, etc. We see depth and layers to her and Link's relationship. The only time when Link and Zelda have had a similar relationship was in Spirit Tracks to some degree. Regardless, Some of the most important elements of Zelda lore are given the utmost attention in BoTW, more than any other game I'd argue.

Last, BoTW did what every great and acclaimed major Zelda title should do; Innovate. I would say the most important/influential Zelda titles in the series are Legend of Zelda for NES, A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and I might also say Wind Waker. Note that I'm not saying these are the best titles necessarily, but they really served as titles that innovated and moved the series forward. LoZ was the very creation, ALttP gave the dungeon formula, OoT laid the entire groundwork for the move to 3D, and Wind Waker was very new for Zelda at an artistic level with the Toon Link style and expressiveness of the world. BoTW has innovated in so many ways that it's hard to see what the series will look like in the future. From exploration, to rock climbing, the Sheikah Slate/Runes, the armor system, combat, the paraglider, etc. Zelda games are often criticized if they are too formulaic and don't bring something new to the table, and in this area, BoTW simply knocks it out of the park.

Any Zelda fan can easily spend 300 hours in this game, and I would argue that at times because so many of us have spent hundreds of hours in the game, that it's in this weird point in Zelda history where it's not new enough to be blown away by it's innovation, but it's not old enough to look at it through loving nostalgic glasses as so many video gamers are known for. But regardless, I think what it does for the Zelda series as a whole is truly amazing. I love the Dungeon format we've seen in games past, but what BoTW has done to shake up the series I completely welcome.
