[SS] IMO Skyward Sword is by far the most underrated Zelda game

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 12:21 AM PDT

I don't get all the hate this game gets. Yes, it has flaws, but so does every other Zelda game. Yes, this game is linear, but linearity isn't inherently a bad thing if it's done well. Plus, every Zelda game from A Link to the Past and on has been linear except A Link Between Worlds and Breath of the Wild, even though Skyward Sword is especially linear.

One criticism I do agree with is the way the overworld is disconnected. The three main areas are completely disconnected from one another and you access them via a hub world (the Sky), making it feel a little bit like a game such as Super Mario 64/Sunshine rather than a more connected overworld in previous 3D Zelda games. The three main areas are also quite dungeonish, in that they're pretty linear with a lot of corridors/chambers and puzzles. The puzzles in these areas are very well designed, but it does take away from some of the exploration in other Zelda games. The only true open area is the Sky, but that's pretty much empty expect for Skyloft and a couple other small islands.

I agree that Fi can be annoying at times, but man do people waaaaaaay over exaggerate her. She's not really significantly worse than Navi. Okay, maybe slightly worse, but not bad enough to bring down the game more than maybe half a point. She's a minor inconvenience at worst. There are even people that say she "spoils most puzzle solutions". What?? What a bunch of hogwash. Sure, she may spoil two or three puzzles, but that's nowhere near "most puzzles" in a 30-50 hour game. She may point out the obvious a bit, repeat things NPCs said, or remind you your hearts/batteries is low, but none of that is the same as spoiling puzzles. About 99% of legitimate puzzles in the game you get to solve on your own.

Also, a lot of people complain that motion controls are not responsive. I'm genuinely curious as to why that is because I had pretty much zero issues with motion controls. I can totally understand if you just don't like motion controls, but I don't understand how they would be unresponsive unless your controller was broken.

Now, one thing this game does really well are it's dungeons and puzzles. For example, the Ancient Cistern is a very unique dungeon with how it's based on a short story called "The Spider's Thread", and the two floors of the dungeon are based on Heaven and Hell. The riddle in the beginning of the dungeon is also pretty clever where you have to get the code from parts of the statue. The Sandship is one of my favorite dungeons of the series. The way the pirate ship itself is the dungeon is so unique. The dungeon has clever puzzles that use the timeshift stone that can be challenging at times, especially the one with the lifeboat. Lastly, Sky Keep is probably my favorite final dungeon in the series. The whole concept of rearranging the layout of the rooms is so clever. The puzzles within the rooms are also really good. Even the puzzles outside the dungeons are good, especially the timeshift stones in the Lanayru region. Also, Skyloft is a really good town and is full of interesting sidequests, and the game has one of the best stories in the series.

A lot of people complain about having to revisit the same areas. First of all, is that not also the case in other Zelda games. In Ocarina of Time, do you not have to revisit Lost Woods, Death Mountain, Zora's Domain, and Lake Hylia as an adult after you already visited them as a kid? Plus, outside of that one part where you have to revisit the Skyview Temple, you're never doing the same thing. Each time you revisit an area, you either go to a new part of that region, or you revisit a part of the region that drastically changes. The second time you visit Faron, you go to the Great Tree and Lake Floria. The third time, the whole forest floods. The second time you visit Eldin, you go to the volcano summit. The third time, there's an eruption and the entire region morphs into a stealth section. The second time you visit Lanayru, you go to the Sand Sea, and you go to Lanayru Gorge the third time.

Although Skyward Sword has it's flaws, it does tons of things right and IMO the pros greatly outweigh the cons. Obviously no game is for everyone, but to me it just seems like people just bash on the game for it's flaws and completely ignore it's good qualities like dungeons, puzzles, and story.

P.S. As a genuine question, why does everyone seem to hate the dowsing mechanic? I don't see anything wrong with it.
